Nelson County commissioners reorganize leadership, end State's Attorney joint agreement and approve tax abatement

Nelson County Commissioners on Dec. 3, 2024, unanimously reorganized their leadership, approved a property tax abatement and voted to terminate the existing State's Attorney Joint Powers Agreement with Griggs County.
Chairman Cody Johnson presided over both a special 8:00 a.m. session and the regular 9:00 a.m. meeting. In the special meeting, Commissioners moved to appoint Cody Johnson as chairman and Aaron Mork as vice chairman; both motions passed on unanimous votes.
The commission then opened its regular meeting, approved prior minutes and considered several agenda additions and items. Tractor bids were opened and discussed but the commission tabled further action on those bids until the next regular meeting.
Jayme Tenneson, the county's State's Attorney, addressed commission responsibilities related to county business. Following that discussion, Commissioner Mike Haugland moved, and Commissioner Aaron Mork seconded, a motion to terminate the existing State's Attorney Joint Powers Agreement with Griggs County; the commission approved the motion unanimously. The termination was recorded as an official commission action.
Nathan Parks, Nelson County Auditor, presented a tax abatement case. The commission voted unanimously to approve an abatement for parcel 21-0003-46629-000.
The board also set its 2025 meeting schedule: the Park Board will meet every first and third Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., and the County Commission will meet every first and third Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. The commission made a slate of appointments and reappointments: Cody Johnson to the Job Development Authority Board; Doug Flaagan to the Public Health Board; Cameron Swenson to the Eastern Plains Human Service Zone Board and to Planning & Zoning; Mike Haugland to the Planning & Zoning Committee and as an alternate on the Law Enforcement Center Board; and the reappointment of Dennis Fahey to the Nelson County Park Board and Amie Vasichek to the Public Health Board. All recorded motions passed unanimously.
The commission approved the presented bills on a roll-call unanimous vote and then adjourned the meeting. The minutes and signature lines were signed by Nathan Parks, Nelson County Auditor, and Cody Johnson, Chairman.
