Cavalier County commissioners approve three tobacco-related resolutions; one passes 3–2

The Cavalier County Board of Commissioners approved three Resolutions of Support related to Tobacco Free North Dakota on Oct. 1, 2024; two passed unanimously (motions carried) and a proposal to raise tobacco prices passed on a 3–2 vote.
The Cavalier County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 1 approved three Resolutions of Support linked to Tobacco Free North Dakota after Public Health staff requested the measures.
Steph Welsh, representing Cavalier County Public Health, asked the board to back a fully funded tobacco control program, support the North Dakota Smoke-Free Law, and support raising the price of tobacco products in the state. Commissioners moved and seconded the three separate resolutions; two motions were recorded as carried without a roll-call vote.
The resolution to raise tobacco prices drew a split vote. Chairman David Zeis; Commissioner Nick Moser; and Commissioner Stanley Dick voted yes. Commissioner Greg Goodman and Commissioner Austin Lafrenz voted no. The board recorded the outcome as carried 3–2.
The resolutions are expressions of support; no ordinance or county pricing measure was proposed. Public Health also discussed staffing plans to appoint a new county Health Officer later in the year.
