Whitfield County commissioners elect Robbins vice chair, approve licenses and board appointments

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 12 elected Commissioner Barry W. Robbins as vice chair for 2026 and approved a slate of appointments and reappointments to local authorities and regional bodies.
Commissioner Greg Jones nominated Robbins; Commissioner John Thomas seconded the nomination and the board voted 4-0 to elect Robbins. Chairman Jevin Jensen presented commissioner appointments to local commissions and authorities, including the Dalton-Whitfield Trade Center, the Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority, the Greater Dalton MPO and the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission. The board approved Jensen’s appointments 4-0.
The board also held a public hearing on two alcohol license applications — DN Enterprises LLC d/b/a Sam Tobacco Beverage at 2211 E. Morris St., Dalton, and Hare Krishna 8 LLC d/b/a Quality Convenience Mart at 519 Reed Rd., Dalton. No members of the public spoke during the hearing, and the board later approved both alcohol beverage licenses by a 4-0 vote.
Reappointments to the Dalton-Whitfield Joint Development Authority (Frank Robertson and Kevin Harris) were approved for one-year terms ending Jan. 31, 2027. Brennen Purcell was appointed to fill an unexpired JDA term to expire Jan. 31, 2028; the appointment passed unanimously.
The meeting opened with the board approving the Jan. 12 agenda and certifying minutes from Dec. 8, 2025 and Dec. 15, 2025. The board also approved a proclamation declaring Jan. 12, 2026, “Bobby Earwood Day.”
The chairman announced upcoming elections — a 14th Congressional District special election on March 10, 2026, and local county and school elections on May 19, 2026 — and noted a February informational session on the proposed FLOST (floating homestead local option sales tax). The board adjourned following an executive-session discussion of personnel matters.
