Polk County commissioners approve zoning changes, procurement award and budget amendments in routine April meeting

The Polk County Board of Commissioners approved a slate of routine land-use, procurement and budget items at its April 1, 2025 meeting, including zoning changes, variances, a procurement award, pay-rate adjustments for the Board of Equalization and a $115,000 capital allocation to the county morgue.
On land-use matters the board approved Z25-03, a rezoning request for 5 acres at 0 Rockmart Highway submitted by Dalton Cuthbertson, and SU25-01, a special use permit for an events venue merchandise shop at 639 Knox Mountain Road submitted by Jeremy Absher of Blueberry Farm. The board also approved two variances: V25-01, requested by CWT Properties and represented by Mark Campbell, to allow a compacted aggregate parking surface and split-rail fence at 3163 Cedartown Highway; and V25-02, requested by Jerome W. Bentley and represented by Jason Bentley, to permit gravel or millings on a parking lot at 578 Tallapoosa Highway. Planning and Zoning Commission recommendations were noted in the record; the board approved these items unanimously.
The board approved an amendment to the rates of pay for Board of Equalization members, setting the rate at $10.35 per hour effective July 1, 2025. The Ordinance Committee recommendation to amend Articles 3 and 5 of the Polk County Development Regulations was also approved.
On procurement the Bid Committee recommendation to award construction material and labor for a 40-by-100 pole barn extension at the Public Works Facility to CGS Waterproofing for $56,329.21 was accepted. The board amended the Capital Fund 340 budget to allocate an additional $115,000 to the County Morgue project.
The board re-adopted a resolution creating a joint development authority with Floyd and Bartow counties and appointed three Polk County members to that authority: Chris Thomas, Karen Nissan and Ben Lovvorn. Most votes on these agenda items were unanimous; where the record shows otherwise, the roll-call detail is noted in the meeting minutes.
The County Manager delivered a report and commissioners offered comments; no further action was taken. The board adjourned the meeting afterward.
