County Manager Matt Denton told the Polk County Board of Commissioners at its Feb. 4, 2025 meeting that the county had been awarded $1.6 million from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources under the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program for the county’s Conservation Fund application.
Denton said he learned of the award shortly before the meeting and raised concerns about long-term maintenance responsibilities and site safety tied to the potential acquisition and development. After a brief discussion, Commissioner John Paschal moved to table the matter so staff could provide additional information on maintenance and safety; Commissioner Michael Gravett seconded. The board voted unanimously to table acceptance of the grant.
Why it matters: an awarded grant of this size could add substantial acquisition and development funds to Polk County’s conservation efforts, but acceptance typically carries maintenance obligations, matching- or operating-cost considerations, and potential land-management responsibilities. Commissioners asked for clear answers before committing county resources or future obligations.
What’s next: administration is to return with specific information on maintenance plans, safety mitigation, projected operating costs and any matching requirements. The minutes record a planned follow-up; the board did not set a final deadline in the minutes other than tabling the item for a future meeting.
This action was procedural (tabling) and does not mean the county accepted or declined the award; it preserves the board’s ability to consider acceptance after review.
