Polk County clears $1.67M LMIG paving program, approves labor supplements and ends Floyd County inmate-labor agreement

Public Works Director Dion Senn presented the 2026 LMIG (Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant) paving list, recommending approximately $1,665,823 in SPLOST funding to pave 21.06 miles of county roads. The board approved the list as recommended.
Separately, the board accepted a Public Works Committee recommendation to designate up to $66,000 from the 2026 LMIG paving grant to fund paving-labor supplements. The ordinance-language motion authorizes supplements of up to $6,000 per paving crew employee per year, to be paid bi-weekly, intended to help attract and retain paving personnel.
Public Works Director Dion Senn also recommended the county not renew its inmate labor agreement with Floyd County, saying the quality and consistency of the inmate pool had diminished and noting repeated changes in inmate guard assignments. Commissioner John Paschal moved to approve the recommendation; Commissioner Linda Liles seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
