Quitman County Commission denies $50,000 offer for old gymnasium over loss of public use

The Georgetown-Quitman County Commission unanimously denied an offer to sell the Quitman County Old Gymnasium after the prospective buyer said the rehabilitated building would not remain available for public use.
County Manager Jason Weeks told the commission that Mrs. Martha McKenzie had offered $50,000 to purchase and rehabilitate the gym, but would not retain it for public programming. Commissioner David Kinsey moved to deny the offer; Commissioner Richard Baggett seconded the motion, which passed with recorded affirmative votes from Commissioners Bussey, Kinsey, Baggett and Green.
The decision preserves the county’s options for future community use. Weeks noted the county’s Recreation Board is working toward restoring the gym as a community facility. The minutes do not record additional proffers from the offeror or alternative proposals to guarantee public access.
The commission made the decision during a May 20 called meeting after adding the gym offer to the agenda; no public comments were recorded on the item. The commission did not enter executive session on the matter.
