At its Aug. 4 meeting, the Jasper County Board of Commissioners approved a series of routine but consequential items, including appointments, a retail alcohol license, an intergovernmental agreement, bid authorizations and adjustments to special district fees.
Appointments and licenses: the board appointed Devon Jahn, Gail Harrell and Ross Hayes to the Azalea Regional Library Board; appointed Dan Mauldin to the Jasper County Water and Sewer Authority for a three-year term; and named Commissioner Sheila Pounds as the county delegate to the ACCG Legislative Leadership Conference in October. Commissioners also approved an alcohol license for Jaymaddi 23, LLC to sell beer and wine at a store on Hwy 142 in Shady Dale.
Intergovernmental agreement: County Attorney Adam Nelson explained an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Monticello for the county to operate municipal court services and handle payments; the board approved the agreement and Nelson said the city may need to take action on its end.
Procurement and public works: commissioners authorized staff to solicit bids for tree-limbing on county paved roads and approved a motion to put out a bid for fifty miles of specified roads chosen by commissioners, with an initial budget authorization of up to $300,000 to bid after roads are identified.
Fees and special districts: commissioners reduced the Jasper Memorial Hospital special district fee to a $40 flat rate (motion passed 4–1, Commissioner Pounds did not vote); adopted the FY2026 Fire Protection Special District Fee of $28.63; and authorized the FY2026 solid waste curbside fee of $205.33 for qualifying parcels.
Other: The board set dates for a called meeting in August and directed staff to schedule work sessions and draft a purchasing policy to support zero-based budgeting efforts.
What happens next: staff will carry out appointments, finalize agreements and proceed with procurement and fee billing as authorized. Several items will require follow-up meetings or contract actions.
