Jasper County commissioners on Aug. 22, 2025 authorized the chairman to sign the county’s FLOST (Floating Local Option Sales and Use Tax) intergovernmental agreement and unanimously adopted a resolution asking the Election Superintendent to call an election on the proposed sales tax.
The meeting opened at 9:00 a.m. with Chairman Bruce Henry presiding. "The City of Monticello has signed the IGA so they will not be attending the meeting. The City of Shady Dale has opted to be an absent municipality so we only have to have approval to sign the IGA and resolution," Chairman Bruce Henry said, explaining why municipal representatives were not present. Commissioner Sheila Pounds moved to authorize the chairman to sign the FLOST IGA; Commissioner Asher Gray seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner Steven Ledford then moved to adopt Resolution #2025.08.22C "for the purpose of implementing a County Floating Local Option Sales and Use Tax and requesting the Election Superintendent to call an election of the voters of Jasper County to approve the imposition of the sales and use tax and approving the form of ballot to be used in the election as presented." Commissioner Sheila Pounds seconded the motion, which also passed unanimously. The transcript records adoption of the resolution and approval of the ballot "as presented," but does not include the ballot language or a scheduled election date.
The board recorded the meeting as having Commissioner Bruce Henry (Chairman), Commissioner Steven Ledford (Vice Chair), Commissioner Sheila Pounds and Commissioner Asher Gray present. The session closed at 9:02 a.m. with a motion by Commissioner Ledford and a second from Commissioner Pounds.
Next steps recorded in the minutes: the resolution requests the Election Superintendent to call the election; the transcript does not specify the superintendent’s timeline or the contents of the ballot. The clerk signed the minutes as recorded.
