Jasper County lowers commercial landfill rate to $60 per ton for county businesses

Chairman Bruce Henry told the board the county currently charges $90 per ton for commercial dumping and that the higher charge was set partly to slow the landfill filling. Henry said some local requests asked for a lower rate to attract more business; he asked staff to survey surrounding counties on prevailing rates. "I sked Mr. Benton and staff to do a survey to see what surrounding counties are charging," Henry said, adding that he had heard rates as low as $45.
Commissioner Steven Ledford moved to lower the commercial rate to $60 per ton for Jasper businesses effective the day of the meeting; Commissioner Sheila Pounds seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Henry suggested that a $60 or $65 rate could "take some of the burdens off our local companies." The board noted the landfill is open Fridays and Saturdays.
No specific fiscal analysis or projected revenue impact for the reduced rate was provided during the discussion; commissioners directed staff to present comparative county rates at a subsequent meeting.
