Jasper County authorizes advertisement of FY2026 proposed budget and 2025 millage rate

On Aug. 4 the Jasper County Board of Commissioners authorized staff to advertise the proposed FY2026 budget and the 2025 maintenance and operations millage.
County Manager Mike Benton presented budget options tied to differing effective dates for a previously discussed pay increase; he reported the rollback millage rate is 9.718 and the current rate is 9.99. Benton said a budget using a 9/1/2025 effective raise would total $16,436,750, while a 7/1/2025 effective date produced a $16,569,032 figure; after adjustments and removing a $10,000 grant request the board directed advertising a budget of $16,426,750 at a millage rate of 9.718.
Commissioners discussed personnel pay: Commissioner Asher Gray asked for a countywide pay study to inform future increases; Commissioner Ledford suggested merit-based raises instead of a blanket COLA. Commissioner Ledford moved to authorize staff to advertise the proposed FY2026 budget of $16,426,750 with a millage rate of 9.718; Commissioner Pounds seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The board scheduled public hearings and possible adoption dates in August with staff to publish official notices as required by state law.
