Residents ask Jasper County to limit early political yard signs and add speed bumps on Norris Drive

At the Sept. 19 meeting James Belcher spoke during citizens’ comments about the county’s temporary political yard sign ordinance, saying signs for the 2026 election are already appearing and that enforcement is weak. "Maybe when someone qualifies for the election," Belcher said, suggesting the county tie sign placement to candidate qualification dates (he noted qualifying for 2026 is in March 2026). "We just don't want to get covered up with yard signs that are going to be there for years," he said.
Later in the meeting resident Mitchell Andrews asked commissioners to consider installing speed bumps on Norris Drive, saying traffic has increased and that children play in the neighborhood. Commissioner Sheila Pounds said she had collected resident feedback and that most respondents favored the bumps; Chair Bruce Henry asked Public Works to survey the area and report back on options. Commissioners did not make a final decision but directed staff to study locations and return with recommendations.
The board took no ordinance or capital action on these citizen requests at the meeting; both items were forwarded for staff follow-up and potential inclusion on a future agenda.
