Jasper County awards road contract, buys public-works truck and approves equipment purchases; several items tabled

The county awarded the 2025 LRA road contract to Pittman Construction for $754,676, approved a $46,106 Ford F-150 for Public Works and various IT and equipment purchases, awarded a roofing contract and approved a $40,000 LRA allocation for the Senior Center parking lot; a senior center ice-maker request and a tree-limb removal award were tabled.
At its Oct. 6 meeting the Jasper County Board of Commissioners approved several capital expenditures and awarded the low bid for LRA-funded road work while tabling other requests for additional information.
Road and paving The county accepted a low bid of $754,676 from Pittman Construction for 2025 LRA road projects that include full-depth repairs and widening on Jackson Lake Road and a culvert replacement and paving on Middlebrooks Pond Road. County Manager Mike Benton said the LRA grant covers the work with no county match required, and commissioners approved using leftover LRA funds to pay for repairs to the Senior Center parking lot, authorizing $40,000 for resurfacing, striping and curb stoppers.
Buildings and equipment Public Works Director Michael Walsh won approval to replace an aging pickup for $46,105.96 after describing a 2007 truck with more than 330,000 miles. Commissioners discussed vehicle care, daily inspection logs and running boards to reduce wear.
Mr. Walsh also presented roof bids for the county’s old Public Works office building; the board awarded the contract to Blackdog Roofing for $51,789 with change orders requiring subsequent board approval.
IT and smaller equipment The board authorized upgrades to county computers and monitors (Tax Assessor, Tax Commissioner, Fire Rescue and Senior Center) after trimming one Senior Center laptop from the original request. County Extension received approval to buy a replacement clay thrower for its 4‑H shotgun team at $2,843.
Items tabled Commissioners tabled the Senior Center commercial ice maker request pending more pricing options and deferred awarding a 48-mile right-of-way tree-limb removal bid because of widely divergent proposals. The landfill residential tipping-fee discussion was also tabled and scheduled for a work session.
Why it matters The LRA-funded road work and the awarded contracts will directly impact road safety and travel times and use state grant funds. Equipment purchases address worn county assets and program needs (4‑H); tabling the ice maker and limb removal bids indicates commissioners sought more competitive pricing or specifications before committing county funds.
What’s next Pittman Construction will be scheduled for work, weather permitting, and county staff will follow up on contract details and the Senior Center parking lot allocation. Tabled items will be revisited at future meetings or work sessions.
