Pierce County manager outlines FY2025 budget planning and department reports; resident urges stronger code enforcement on potholes

County Manager Raphel Maddox presented the County Manager's Report at the June 4 Pierce County Board of Commissioners meeting, outlining budget planning for fiscal year 2025 and operational reports from multiple county departments.
Maddox said revenues were on budget through February and expenditures were within budget through the same period. The Fire Department reported 68 total personnel (2 full-time and 66 volunteer firefighters), 239 incidents for the month, and progress on station projects including near-complete work at Southside Station 5.
The Road Department reported May maintenance results: 90 potholes patched (32 categorized as major), 1,143 road grader miles, 394 loads of dirt hauled and other routine maintenance numbers and special projects including preliminary plans for Gilman Road (pending CSX permit) and ongoing work at Sandy Bottom and other sites.
During public comment, resident Roger Hamelin asked about repairs behind Farr's and said the pothole patches were not done correctly; Maddox said Planning & Codes Director Chris Bond had documented the site and was preparing citations. Stephanie Bell of Pierce County Family Connection urged the county to help with education, homelessness and opioid use and presented a report on Family Connections programs.
The board also approved a revised background screening policy for the Pierce County Recreation Department effective June 4, 2024, and recognized county employee graduates and the Employee of the Month, Bonnie Bickerstaff.
