Irwin County elections office shifts early-processing plan to reduce Election Day crowding

Irwin County Election Supervisor Ethan Compton said the county’s poll workers have been trained, Logic and Accuracy testing is finished and early voting is underway as officials prepared for the Nov. 5, 2025 general election. ‘‘Poll workers have been trained, Logic and Accuracy Testing has been completed and as of today, Early Voting is underway,’’ Compton said.
Compton proposed moving early processing of absentee-by-mail ballots and the tabulation of early voting to begin at 10 a.m. on Election Day so the board could leave after completing those tasks and return when polls close at 7 p.m. He said the change is intended to reduce crowding during the post-work voting rush. ‘‘We are hoping to move early processing of absentee by mail ballots and tabulation of early voting to begin at 10am,’’ Compton said. He added that board members are legally barred from sharing any insights they might obtain regarding election results during those processes.
Compton told the board the elections office has budgeted and staffed for the November election and that the office has planned for contingencies. He said the office conducts Logic and Accuracy testing and trains poll workers well in advance to reduce errors on Election Day.
Votes at a glance: the board approved the meeting minutes after a motion by Representative Wyatt Thompson and a second from Chairman Waymond Harris; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the minutes. Representative Thompson later moved to adjourn; Harris seconded and the meeting closed at 5:14 p.m. The board scheduled reconciliation and certification meetings for Friday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to reconcile and certify the Nov. 5 election.
The next procedural step for election administration is the Nov. 7 reconciliation and certification meetings. No public comment was recorded at the Oct. 14 meeting.
