Echols County commissioners approve cemetery board dissolution, ordinance updates, comprehensive plan and $4,000 fireworks funding

The Echols County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on several routine but binding items at its June 5, 2025 meeting.
The board approved a resolution to dissolve the Statenville Cemetery Board and transfer its responsibilities to the Board of Commissioners; the motion was proposed by Commissioner Justin Staten, seconded by Commissioner Bobby Walker, and passed 4‑0. The board also approved an update to the county cemetery ordinance on a 4‑0 vote.
Commissioner Stanley Corbett moved to approve the county’s Comprehensive Plan and authorize the Southern Georgia Regional Commission to submit it to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs; the motion passed unanimously. The board approved spending $4,000 on fireworks for Fourth of July celebrations following a motion by Commissioner Justin Staten and a second by Commissioner Stanley Corbett.
Earlier in the evening the board approved the meeting agenda and minutes from May 1 by unanimous votes. During old business commissioners resumed a discussion about a possible transfer of the Warren Water Authority and residents raised concerns about water system debts, upgrade costs and rates; commissioners said they will continue due diligence and public outreach. The board adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
