Union County commissioners approve mileage increase, highway equipment purchases, personnel moves and set tax-deed auction

Union County commissioners on June 11 approved a set of administrative and operational actions including a county mileage rate increase, highway equipment purchases, personnel approvals, and claims.
The board voted to raise the county travel reimbursement rate from $0.51 per mile to $0.65 per mile, effective July 1, 2024, to match the state rate. The motion was made by Vice Chairman Richard Headid and seconded by Commissioner Dailey and is recorded as carried.
On highway business, Highway Superintendent Jerry Buum presented requests for equipment. The board approved purchasing four vehicle lifts from Minnehaha County at $15,000 each and a sweeper for $10,000, a combined commitment of $70,000. The board also approved reinstating Ed Blake as a seasonal flag worker at $18 per hour starting June 17, 2024. The board approved a permit for the Sue Lulf Memorial Road Race/Walk on CR #1B, CR #6 and CR #7 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. July 13, 2024, and authorized Chairman Milton Ustad to sign Letters of No Objection for the Big Sioux Pedestrian Bridge Crossing Phase 2 in Sioux City, Iowa.
The board accepted the resignation of Jailer Noah King (last day June 7, 2024) and approved travel and training for staff to attend a Vanguard User Meeting (NCRAAO) in Chamberlain Aug. 6–8; minutes note training is free. The board also voted to follow the state and close the courthouse July 4 and July 5, 2024, for the Independence Day holiday.
The board audited and approved claims and warrants. The minutes list BW payroll totals of $99,352.46 (pay period 5/31/2024) and $104,161.77 (pay period 6/14/2024) among many vendor payments; the minutes contain the full claims listing. Commissioners approved an auction for two tax-deed parcels to be held July 23, 2024 at the Union County Courthouse. Planning and Zoning presented a rezoning request for Fenco Tr. 1 in Elk Point Township; the minutes record the presentation but not a final decision in this meeting.
