Union County approves two abatements, authorizes travel and accepts jail staff resignations

The Union County Board of Commissioners approved two tax abatements, authorized travel for county training, accepted personnel resignations and named a regional representative at its July 9 meeting in Elk Point.
Abatement #2025-016 was approved with total adjustments across taxing entities of $1,490.76 (county, city and fire district allocations listed in the minutes). Abatement #2025-015 was approved with a total of $285.74 distributed among county and local taxing jurisdictions (motions recorded as carried).
The board approved travel for Lisa Schenzel to attend a Suicide Prevention class in Sioux Falls on Aug. 1–2, 2024 (motion by Dailey, second by Kimmel). Commissioners also authorized Chairman Headid to sign the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance (SDPAA) acknowledgement of known and unknown claims and the related intergovernmental contract (motion by Joffer, second by Kimmel).
Personnel actions recorded in the minutes include acceptance of the resignation of jailer Omar Villalpando (last day June 16, 2024) and deputy Issac Sauder (last day July 3, 2024). The board appointed Commissioner Kevin Joffer as the representative to the Southeastern Council of Governments (SECOG) (motion by Kimmel, second by Dailey).
