At its July 23 meeting the Union County Board of Commissioners approved personnel moves, accepted a legislative audit and approved the sale of surplus county lots at auction.
The board accepted the Legislative Audit results for 2021–2022 and the biennial-period reports as presented by Matthew White and Jeff Schaefer; the acceptance was recorded with a motion by Commissioner Joffer and a second by Commissioner Dailey.
Personnel actions included approval to convert Cassandra Dobberstein from a part-time jailer to full-time (position change noted as effective 6/23/24), hiring Julia Ensminger as a full-time jailer at $19.62 per hour starting July 15, 2024, approval for Shannon Steckelberg to attend a two-week 911 certificate course in Pierre (Sept. 29–Oct. 11) with meals and lodging provided by the academy, and the board’s acceptance of Deputy Austin Schuller’s resignation effective Aug. 4, 2024. The board also approved hiring Daniel Scott as Chief Planning and Zoning at an annual salary of $50,000 starting Aug. 12, 2024.
The county conducted a live surplus real-estate auction July 23. Parcel 01.01.08.1015 (vacant lot at 306 Iowa Street, Alcester) sold for a $1,000 bid to HRC Housing; Parcel 12.00.26.2035 (1.5-acre parcel south of Big Springs) sold for $1,000 to McKenzie Construction. Buyers paid in full at auction and received quit-claim deeds; purchasers are responsible for obtaining quiet-title actions to obtain clear title.
The board audited and approved claims and payroll for the period, with total payroll listed in the minutes as $92,229.68 for the 7/26/2024 payroll run. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 1:01 p.m.; the board scheduled a special meeting for July 30, 2024 to continue budget discussions.
