Union County cuts speed limit near Dakota Valley Schools after flood reroutes traffic

The Union County Board of Commissioners voted July 23 to temporarily reduce the speed limit along a stretch of County Road #1B near Dakota Valley Schools after flooding disrupted normal school traffic routes. The board approved Resolution HD2024-04, which lowers the posted limit from 55 mph to 45 mph for 1,000 feet on either side of the intersection with County Road #1 and directs that the speed be returned to 55 mph once normal traffic flow is re-established.
Commissioner Joffer moved for approval and Commissioner Dailey seconded the motion; the resolution carried. The resolution cites South Dakota Codified Law 32-25-9.1 as the board’s authority to establish speed zones on the county highway system.
The change is intended to provide an immediate safety buffer for school traffic rerouted by flood-related road conditions. The board did not set a specific reversion date; the resolution states the increase back to 55 mph will occur when normal traffic to Dakota Valley Schools is re-established. Staff were asked to coordinate any needed signage and to monitor traffic conditions until normal routes resume.
The action was recorded as Resolution HD2024-04 and will remain in effect only temporarily according to the text adopted by the commissioners.
