Kelloggsville highlights summer-school results, community celebration and student travel
Summary
District staff reported summer-school results (June 3–27), announced a Community Celebration for Sept. 13, and heard student accounts of a summer Art Travelers trip to Thailand; summer programs showed majority credit attainment in middle- and high-school offerings.
Kelloggsville Public Schools officials reported on summer programming, announced a fall community event and heard students describe an international learning trip during the Sept. 9 board meeting.
Director of Instruction Jeff Owen summarized summer school, which ran June 3–27 at Central, Kelloggsville Middle School and Kelloggsville High School. Elementary programming enrolled 153 students (class sizes 14–20). At the middle-school level 51 students participated; of enrolled middle-school students, 78% earned at least one credit, 78% earned a math credit, 73% earned an English credit and 67% earned a social-studies credit. K‑12 Connect, a virtual math-tutoring program, enrolled 25 students over two one-hour sessions per week for a total of 18 sessions. At the high school, 67 students earned credit across 88 classes; the high-school summer program reported an overall attendance rate of 88.5%.
Jeff Owen also announced the district Community Celebration scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, 4:30–7:00 p.m., in front of Kelloggsville Middle School with 27 participating groups; new participants include A Glimpse of Africa and PrepandMe.
Ms. Dahlquist and students described an Art Travelers trip to Thailand involving nine students and parent chaperones. Students said the trip included cultural activities, a cooking class, Thai boxing and an elephant sanctuary visit; students expressed appreciation to the board for the learning opportunity. Student board representative Myrece Moore thanked the board for having him serve and mentioned the upcoming football game; Serena Preciado also thanked the board for the opportunity to participate.
The board expressed appreciation for student participation and the programs described. No formal votes were recorded on these informational items.
