Elementary conference turnout strong; principals outline reading, math and SEL plans

Elementary school leaders told trustees they saw strong parent participation at fall conferences and outlined improvement strategies for reading, math and social-emotional learning.
Administrators reported in-person attendance rates of 88.73% at Southeast (11.27% virtual) and 85.65% at West (14.35% virtual). At Central, third grade attendance was 92.52% in-person, fourth grade 85.19% and fifth grade 91.96%. Kelly Farkas said the district scheduled 119 interpreters across both conference nights to support families.
Building leaders described their School Improvement Plans: Southeast is analyzing percentage gains needed to raise proficiency bands; West is using NWEA to target a 50% goal for reading and math and is providing Bookworms, after-school tutoring and intervention blocks; Central operates daily reading pull-outs and has part-time former certified teachers supporting math and ELL instruction. For SEL, administrators are using Second Step curriculum and Kelso's Choices lessons; staff noted rewards and interventions to reinforce positive behavior.
Superintendent Jim Alston and Assistant Superintendent Jeff Owen commended principals and teachers for implementation and follow-up work.
