Kelloggsville outlines SRP rollout, reunification plan and trials vape detectors

At the April 21 meeting, Mr. Augustyn provided the Kelloggsville Board of Education with an overview of recent district security work and planned changes.
He said site surveys have been completed at each building and that the district is working with facilities and transportation staff on refinements. The district is implementing the statewide Standard Response Protocols (SRPs) — Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter — and aims to have them integrated by 2026. Augustyn described planned training with the Wyoming and Kentwood police departments to familiarize officers with district buildings.
Among other measures, the district is trialing a vape detector at the middle school and developing a reunification plan with Resurrection Life Church and neighboring districts to coordinate evacuations. Augustyn also said the district has engaged Secure Environment Consultants to inspect athletic facilities and identify strengths and areas for improvement.
Why it matters: SRP adoption standardizes emergency responses across districts and first responders, and the reunification planning aims to streamline post-incident family reunification. The vape-detector trial is an operational experiment to address vaping in schools but will be evaluated before wider rollout.
Board members acknowledged the ongoing work and asked for continued updates as plans and training are finalized.
