Kelloggsville officials outline safety upgrades, facilities work and new mentoring partnership

District staff provided multiple operational updates to the Kelloggsville Board of Education at its Oct. 13 meeting.
Safety and emergency operations: Mr. Augustyn and Assistant Superintendent Eric Alcorn summarized districtwide safety measures. Staff are implementing state‑mandated safety terminology — with full compliance expected by 2026 — and installing safety posters, emergency‑exit signage and “No Weapons” stickers across school grounds. Central’s PA is now used at athletic events to broadcast safety information including AED locations and the planned use of weapon detectors; two resource officers have been newly assigned and the district has purchased portable radios to improve communications. Staff are collaborating with both Wyoming and Kentwood police departments on trespassing letters and other coordination; Kentwood patrol cars have been equipped with key fobs to expedite emergency response. A safety tab was added to the district website for parent access.
Facilities: Director Dave Skinner reviewed summer projects including new carpet and paint at Kelloggsville Middle School, new furniture in the media center, replacement of several drinking fountains to meet the Filter First law (remaining replacements scheduled by the end of the school year), and replacement of accordion walls with permanent walls. The bus garage/parking‑lot project is expected to be completed by mid‑October.
Mentoring partnership: Nick Patin described a new partnership with Fox 17 and A Path Forward involving 18 organizations to provide mentoring and wraparound supports for up to 20 high‑school students. Services described include one‑on‑one mentoring, guest speakers, access to a care portal, workforce development, anti‑violence initiatives, career readiness, food assistance, mental‑health resources and childcare support for new parents. A kick‑off event was held Sept. 29 at the high school.
Board members thanked staff for the updates and for ongoing safety and student‑support efforts; the meeting adjourned at 6:58 p.m.
