Board reviews progress on student success, equity goals; district highlights media partnership

Director of Instruction Chad Morrow told the board Oct. 13 that the district is moving forward on Board Goal B — Student Success & Equity — with several near-term steps: DEI-related meetings planned for late October or early November to review program data across buildings; a professional development day focused on strategies to reduce the achievement gap for African-American, Hispanic and Special Education students; a needs assessment for science, social studies and grades 6–12 resource rooms to improve credit attainment for Special Education students; and an EL program evaluation by Mrs. Lanser. Morrow said discussions are underway about renaming the DEI initiative to better reflect current priorities.
Separately, Ms. Groters and Joanne Bailey-Boorsma briefed the board on the district’s third year of partnership with School News Network. Bailey-Boorsma said SSN employs full-time reporters who cover districts and described classroom-focused stories as among her favorites, calling the role at SSN "her favorite job." The partnership includes monthly story coordination and posting on a dedicated Kelloggsville page on the SSN website.
Board members indicated support for continued data review and professional development; no formal policy changes were made at the meeting.
