Kelloggsville trustees hear elementary improvement goals; target growth on spring assessments

District staff presented elementary school improvement plans and fall-to-spring assessment goals at the Nov. 10 Kelloggsville Board meeting. Denise Wass and Bilal Muhammad said Southeast and West elementary schools set targets for 70% of students to meet or exceed projected growth in reading and 75% in math; last year 62% met the reading target at those buildings. Central Elementary set a 50% projected-growth target in both reading and math.
Staff described a three-times-per-year NWEA assessment schedule (fall, winter, spring) and instructional supports including Bookworm, IRP and daily literacy work for younger grades; Math Expressions, EnVision Math and Bridges were cited for math instruction. SEL goals aim for growth for all students, with weekly SEL instruction and supports such as Second Step, PBIS and SOAR. Presenters also said English-language learners commonly require two to four years after arrival to exit ELL instruction and pointed to strong recent WIDA results for exiting students.
The board thanked staff for the reports and expressed support for the instructional plans. No formal action was taken; plans were presented for trustee review.
