Board-funded field trip sends 305 Kelloggsville elementary students to Outdoor Discovery Center

At its Nov. 10 meeting, the Kelloggsville Board of Education was briefed on a board-funded field trip that brought hands-on science learning to elementary students at the Outdoor Discovery Center. Mrs. Zender and Ms. Dykhouse told trustees that 155 fifth-grade and 150 fourth-grade students participated; transportation and activity costs were covered so families paid nothing.
Presenters said fifth-graders studied wetlands in small groups and fourth-graders engaged in lessons aligned to animal-structure science standards, including opportunities to handle animals under instructor supervision. Several instructors were retired teachers who supported learning. The trip concluded with a visit to Lake Michigan; presenters said many students saw the lake for the first time.
Board members praised the trip as creating lasting learning experiences. Marie Groters, secretary, and other trustees thanked staff for organizing the day and noted the value of hands-on experiences in reinforcing classroom instruction.
