Lake Abert and Chewaucan committee maps watershed needs, eyes state funding for next biennium

Vice-Chair Barry Shullanberger gave an update on the Partnership for Lake Abert and the Chewaucan Research Priorities Committee at the board’s Jan. 22 meeting and brought Tess Baker into the session by speaker phone to summarize next steps.
Baker said the committee is mapping watershed areas that need improvements, developing a water flow model and planning how to spend current funding before the funding cycle ends June 2025. She told commissioners the group intends to propose a bill through Rep. Owens in the next legislative session to secure funding for the project’s next biennium.
Baker listed collaborative board members as landowners: Tess Baker, Colleen Withers, Justin Farrell, Jack O'Leary, Jimmy VanBelle, Matt Withers, Dustin Simms and Tom Flynn. The advisory board includes Commissioner Barry Shullanberger, Marty St. Louis, Craig Foster and Autumn Muir. The committee said Oregon Consensus has continued to facilitate the group's work.
The committee asked to continue mapping and priority-setting work and to advance a legislative funding request that would support continued watershed research and implementation planning.
