Rawlins County operations update: Road & Bridge reports staff turnover and Klein Bridge cost; landfill and EMS report ongoing issues

County operations staff gave updates Aug. 30 on roads, landfill and emergency medical services, and commissioners approved several follow-up steps.
Mark Loop, Road and Bridge supervisor, told the board the department has two recent resignations and one new employee. He said crews are currently blading and mowing, that one mower broke down and is awaiting parts, and that an updated contract related to the Klein Bridge repair has been signed. Loop said KDOT will not cover the cost and the county will have to pay $9,000 for the work; he said he would get the contract sent off the same day.
Corey Castens reported landfill and recycling changes: Cahoj is closing Cell 6 and KDOT-related road work means there will be no dumping on Wednesday after 2 p.m.; the county may close the tree pit for safety while Langer (out of Colby) crushes a metal pile. Castens noted city crews helped with asphalt millings when county staff were occupied.
Megan Rippe provided EMS metrics: July and current August run numbers were presented, and she said, "All ambulances are in service and running," while adding EMS remains short-staffed. Rippe told the board EMS needs new computers because the current units are outdated and cannot run the new QuickBooks software; the commissioners requested a quote to replace the computers.
No formal actions were recorded on personnel changes or equipment purchases at the meeting beyond the board directing staff to obtain quotes and to submit the signed Klein Bridge contract.
