Rawlins County orders compactor inspections, discusses landfill fees and recycling contamination

Corey Castens asked the Rawlins County Board of Commissioners to authorize payment for inspections of two landfill compactors (identified as CAT 826H and 826G) so results can be reviewed at the next meeting; the commissioners authorized payment of the inspection invoices.

Castens reviewed landfill fee collection since he began in the role and said a $8,000 check from contractor Spirtas was expected. He raised concerns about half-load charges, said he felt uncomfortable delegating charging decisions to frontline employees, and noted that contracted trash services are not being charged to dump—an issue cast as a policy/practice question for commissioners to address. Castens also reported continued incidents of trash being placed in recycling trailers at sites in Herndon and McDonald, which he flagged as an operational problem requiring attention. Commissioners did not make a policy change at the meeting but approved the inspections so the board can review professional findings before further action.
