Rawlins County funds jail repairs, approves staff pay increase and landfill millings purchase

At its Sept. 16 meeting, the Rawlins County Board of Commissioners authorized funding for jail repairs, approved a personnel pay increase following an executive session, and approved purchases to support landfill recycling.
Sheriff Cat Wahrman described needed jail repairs, a fence installation and the need for additional exterior camera coverage. Commissioners voted to pay for the jail updates from the County Building Fund after Wahrman noted a camera will be relocated to the server room to meet regulations and recommended cameras on the east and west sides of the courthouse to ensure outdoor coverage.
The board entered a 15-minute executive session at 9:58 a.m. regarding non-elected personnel, with Clerk Rachel Finley and Deputy Clerk Renee Sagel present; the session ended at 10:13 a.m. After returning to open session, Commissioner Mark Mosley moved to raise Stacey Mentlick’s rate from $16.00 to $18.00 per hour; Commissioner Alan A. Solko seconded and the motion carried.
Landfill operator Corey Castens requested two loads of asphalt millings to finish recycling and restock the landfill pile; he said Sporer of Oakley offered the lowest price he found. Commissioners approved the purchase after Commissioner Pochop moved and Commissioner Solko seconded.
The board also approved September 2024 vouchers, authorized a prepaid warrant to Glassman for jail repairs from the County Building Fund, and approved Addition & Abatement paperwork from the Appraiser’s Office. Appraiser Alicia Baumfalk and RayeAnn Wright told the board that Tax Relief and Homestead Refund information will be mailed with tax statements; Clerk Rachel Finley noted the school lowered bond mills to 24 mills after passage of a countywide sales tax, which will affect 2024 tax calculations.
The board set Aflac Claims Day for Oct. 9, 2024 and scheduled its next regular meeting for Oct. 15, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. The meeting adjourned at 10:23 a.m.
