Board authorizes public hearing on new local authority to reduce 25 mph zones under state law

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 10 authorized a public hearing on a draft ordinance that would give the County the authority to reduce speed limits currently posted at 25 mph to either 20 or 15 mph in defined business or resident districts, pursuant to §46.2-1300(A)(4) of the Virginia Code.
County Administrator Candice McGarry told the Board the resolution would permit her, following public input, to apply the new local authority to targeted streets. Dr. Jessica L. Ligon moved to adopt Resolution R2024-82 to advertise the public hearing; the motion passed unanimously (4–0). The public hearing will be held Jan. 14, 2025 at 7 p.m. in the General District Courtroom.
"The purpose of the public hearing is to receive public input on an Ordinance proposed for passage to include language to authorize Nelson County as allowed by §46.2-1300 to reduce the speed limit to less than 25 miles per hour," the resolution states.
