Nelson County accepts 37 Tanbark Drive for DSS building and funds asbestos inspection amendment

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 18 authorized acceptance of conveyance of the property at 37 Tanbark Drive in Lovingston for the Department of Social Services building project and approved a contract amendment to prepare asbestos and lead inspections and removal specifications.
Resolution R2025‑11 authorized County Attorney Phillip D. Payne IV to accept the deed of conveyance from Joe Lee McClellan, Inc. in consideration of $775,000 for parcels described as Tax Map Numbers 58‑A‑36 and 58‑A‑37 (1.26 acres, more or less). The motion to accept the conveyance passed unanimously (4–0).
The Board also approved a $5,671 amendment to the PMA Architecture contract to engage Marine Chemist Service, Inc. to perform lead paint and asbestos identification and prepare abatement specifications to be included in the construction bid documents so contractors can account for abatement prior to demolition.
Supervisors said the asbestos work was required to proceed with demolition and construction; staff said the property closing was scheduled for Feb. 21 and the schematic design for the new DSS building would be presented to the Board on March 11.
What happens next: The county will close on the property as authorized, incorporate abatement specifications into bidding documents, and proceed to bid the DSS project once the schematic design is finalized.
