Nelson County joins proposed settlement with Sackler family in nationwide opioid agreement

Nelson County on Aug. 12 adopted a resolution authorizing participation in the proposed direct settlement of opioid-related claims against the Sackler family and directed the County Attorney to execute any documents necessary to participate and accept allocated settlement funds.
Staff said the settlement would be administered consistent with the Virginia Opioid Abatement Fund and referenced earlier settlements with manufacturers and distributors. The resolution notes the local impacts of the opioid epidemic on emergency medical services, law enforcement, and behavioral health and frames participation as a method to recover funds to support those services.
The Board approved Resolution R2025-56 as part of the consent items; the county attorney had reviewed and recommended participation. The resolution directs adherence to the Virginia MOU for allocation and administration of settlement proceeds.
