Sheriff Mark Embrey told the board the department successfully used an AED on a recent call and that deputies often arrive on scenes before volunteer rescue squads or Wintergreen Emergency Services. He said the department applied for the RSAF grant, which requires a 50/50 local match; the grant portion does not exceed $4,950 and total equipment cost is $8,700. Embrey said Asset Forfeiture funds are available and that he could use them if the board preferred.
Chief Ray Cook noted AEDs provide guided prompts and that, when used step‑by‑step, they reliably inform rescuers whether a shock is advised. Board members discussed training and liability; Dr. Jessica L. Ligon asked about certifications and Embrey said he would follow up on specifics.
The board approved the requested local match by roll call vote (3–0).
