Delematre (Deering) Ditch project gets $92,300 H2Ohio grant; hearing set after missing waiver

Breann Hohman, director of the Erie Soil & Water Conservation District, told the Erie County Commissioners on June 4 that the district received a $92,300 H2Ohio Two-Stage Ditch Grant from the Ohio Department of Agriculture to design and construct improvements to the Delematre (also called Deering) Ditch, a project that ties into a county-maintained section of the waterway.
Hohman said most involved landowners have signed waivers but one has not. Because unanimous consent is required to proceed without a hearing, the district requested that the Board set a public hearing so construction and assessments for the county-maintained portion can move forward this year.
On a motion by Commissioner Old, seconded by Commissioner Shoffner, the Board set the public hearing for Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. (roll call: all aye). Hohman told commissioners that landowners will be assessed for the portion of the project not covered by the H2Ohio grant.
The hearing will allow county staff to receive public comment on the proposed work and any assessments tied to the county-maintained section before the project proceeds.
