Commissioner Old urges action after VCB tables Flock camera funding request

County Administrator Hank Solowiej told the Erie County Commissioners that the Visitors & Convention Bureau (VCB) board discussed a request from the City/County to fund Flock Safety cameras but tabled the request. Solowiej said the VCB cited uncertainty about its current budget, uncertainty over whether the City of Sandusky had formally approved the purchase and installation, and a desire to meet with City and County officials to clarify the VCB’s role in public safety and security.
Commissioner Old said he was disappointed the request was tabled and urged the VCB and Shores & Islands to take a primary role in supporting public safety efforts to protect tourism. Old said another shooting occurred over the weekend and noted that about one‑third of inmates in the Erie County Jail are not county residents, arguing that the County cannot continue to postpone action on public safety measures.
No formal Board action to fund Flock cameras was taken during the June 16 meeting; the VCB’s decision to table the request means further meetings will be needed to resolve budget and intergovernmental questions.
