Charlotte County board adopts tax relief resolution, honors fire department and approves routine fiscal items

At its Oct. 9 meeting the Charlotte County Board adopted the PPTRA rate resolution for tax year 2025, adopted a resolution honoring Drakes Branch Volunteer Fire Department’s 75th anniversary, approved several invoices and appropriations, authorized a $500 contribution to a youth girls’ volleyball program, and set public hearings for Nov. 14.
The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors handled a series of routine but notable items at its Oct. 9 meeting, including adoption of tax-relief policy, resolutions recognizing local groups, and multiple budget and invoice actions.
Tax relief: Administrator Daniel N. Witt read and the board adopted a PPTRA (Personal Property Tax Relief Act) resolution for tax year 2025. The resolution applies 26% relief to personal use vehicles with assessed value of $1,000 or less and 26% relief on the first $20,000 of assessed value for vehicles valued at $1,001 or more, restating applicable statutory references cited in the board packet. The resolution passed unanimously.
Honors and community events: The board adopted a resolution honoring the Drakes Branch Volunteer Fire Department on its 75th anniversary and Supervisor Noah Davis presented the framed resolution to Chief Kenny Tharpe. The board noted an anniversary celebration on Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. Supervisor Davis also announced a Veterans’ Day Parade in Drakes Branch on Nov. 9 at 10 a.m.
Fiscal and administrative actions: The board approved FY2025 invoices totaling $726,599.47 and additional invoices received after the September meeting totaling $14,290.85. It approved appropriations of $161,706.00 and authorized refunds for two building permits ($80.29 and $489.60). Supervisor Robert L. Shook Jr. moved, and Supervisor Walter T. Bailey seconded, to provide $500 to support the county’s youth girls’ volleyball program; the motion passed unanimously.
Other business: The board appointed Administrator Witt to cast the county’s vote at the upcoming VACo annual conference (Nov. 9–12). By consensus the board set public hearings for the Central High Museum lease and the Law Lane Tower agreement for Nov. 14 at about 1:05 p.m. Several members encouraged community involvement in Hurricane Helene relief and reminded residents about Fire Prevention Month.
