Brewster County commissioners approve fireworks ban, ALERRT training grant and several permits

Brewster County commissioners met June 25 in Alpine and approved a series of routine and public-safety items, including a countywide fireworks ban and a grant application to host Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training locally.
Judge Greg P. Henington called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. and led the invocation and pledges. The court approved the minutes from its June 11 meeting and accepted the county treasurer's May financial report after brief presentation by Julie Morton, County Treasurer.
In departmental business, Ned Allen of Saw Tooth Survey presented a final plat for the replat of the west half of Block 26, Anderson Addition, in Marathon. Commissioner Ruben Ortega moved to approve the final plat; Commissioner William “Mo” Morrow seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The court accepted the annual report from Emergency Services District No. 1 after presentations from Christin Orren and Jeanette Hall. Road and Bridge Superintendent Frenchie Causey presented his department report and an application for a trenching/boring permit across a county road on Sendero Horsethief Road; the court approved the permit unanimously.
Judge Henington presented the Emergency Management report in the absence of Coordinator James Etchinson and introduced a proposed fireworks ban order. The court voted 5-0 to adopt the fireworks ban order.
Jaclyn Nunley of the Brewster County Sheriff’s Department presented a resolution authorizing application for the FY2025 ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) grant under the FY22 Justice Assistance Grant Program (local pass-through). Nunley said the grant would allow the required training to occur in Alpine rather than sending personnel out of town and would provide nine training kits with simulation equipment. The court approved the grant application 5-0.
During financial approvals, Julie Morton presented the assistant auditor’s report on behalf of Assistant Auditor Paty Saenz. Commissioner Ortega moved to approve the auditor’s report and Commissioner Sara Colando seconded; the motion passed 5-0. The record notes that Commissioner Ortega abstained on a payment to Pinnacle Propane and Commissioner Jim Westermann abstained on a payment to Branding West, as conflicts on those specific vendors.
Robert Alvarez, executive director of Brewster County Tourism, gave a short update about Fourth of July plans including a cook-off July 5–6 and a tourism booth at courthouse festivities; no formal action was taken on tourism items.
