Madison County Board of Health waives late fees for COVID‑affected food‑permit renewals
Summary
The Board of Health unanimously approved waiving late fees for annual food‑permit renewals that expired March–July 2020; fees will apply if renewal payments are not received by Aug. 31, 2020. The Madison County Board of Health on June 17 adopted a resolution waiving late penalties for annual food‑permit renewals that had expiration dates on March 1, April 1, May 1, June 1 and July 1, 2020. The action responds to disruptions caused by COVID‑19 and by state public‑health orders that restricted on‑premises food service.
Under the county Food Sanitation Ordinance, late renewal penalties of $75 per month can apply when permits are not renewed by the due date. The June 17 resolution waives those late fees for permits expiring in the specified months, but it directs that failure to pay by Aug. 31, 2020 will reinstate the full penalties. The resolution states the waiver does not apply to permits expiring after July 1, 2020.
The measure passed unanimously; public‑health committee members said the waiver was intended to ease the financial burden on restaurants and food businesses affected by executive orders and public‑health guidance.
