Parmer County Commissioners on Aug. 26 approved two measures affecting retirement benefits: a 3% cost-of-living increase for current retirees and an increase in the county's retirement matching contribution for employees.
Judge Isabel "Izzy" Carrasco moved to approve a 3% COLA for all existing county retirees beginning in 2025; Commissioner Kenny White seconded and the motion passed by majority vote. Court minutes record that the item had been discussed previously in budget workshops.
Separately, Commissioner Kirk Frye moved to increase the county's matching contribution to employee retirement accounts from the current 1.5% to 2% beginning Jan. 1, 2025. Commissioner Casey Russell seconded and the motion passed by majority vote.
What this means: the retiree COLA applies to current county retirees only, according to the court discussion; the retirement-match increase raises the employer contribution to active employees' retirement accounts beginning in 2025. The minutes do not provide an estimated total dollar cost or funding source for either change.
Next steps: both changes were approved by the court and will be reflected in county payroll and benefits administration; no additional reporting requirements or funding sources were specified in the minutes.
