Commission gives first reading to new Board of Elections policy; roles of supervisor and clerk discussed
Summary
At a work session Sept. 23 the commission read Section 5 of a proposed Board of Elections policy and scheduled it for a second reading; the County Manager and commissioners discussed the supervisor selection process and the County Clerk’s current role in election administration.
The Unified Government commission gave a first public reading of a proposed Board of Elections policy at its Sept. 23 work session and directed the item to a second reading at the next work session.
Chairman Charles Coffey read Section 5 aloud during the session. County Manager Thomas Weaver explained the policy would have a three-member Board of Elections present 1–3 recommendations for an Election Supervisor; the County Manager would then assign the Election Supervisor. Weaver noted the County Clerk is currently certified and performing election duties. Commissioner Damon Hoyte expressed concerns about separation of duties between the Board of Elections and the Election Supervisor; Weaver and other commissioners discussed how day-to-day administration and election processing would remain the board’s responsibility.
Commissioner Timothy Biddle made the motion to have the Board of Elections policy appear for a first public reading at the work session, the motion was seconded by Commissioner Gerald Douglas and the vote was unanimous. The commission set the policy for a second reading in an upcoming meeting before any final adoption.
