Keep Soddy-Daisy Beautiful, volunteers unveil Wimpy's mural after successful Fall Festival

At the Oct. 20 meeting, community volunteers and organizers reported a successful Fall Festival and introduced a new mural on the side of Wimpy's Restaurant.
Jim Stewart, of Emerald Bay Drive and representing Keep Soddy-Daisy Beautiful, and Cindi Sanden reported the festival's success and thanked the commissioners, City Manager, Fire, Police and Public Works departments for their help. Stewart introduced Mary Tomas, 1612 Arapho Drive, as the artist who painted the mural. Tomas said 20 volunteers assisted with the mural and "we spent 50 manhours on scaffolding and ladders." She added, "when you add art you only make cities better."
Commissioners Coleman and Shipley both expressed appreciation for the volunteers and the public works crews who kept the park clean during the event. Mayor Nunley noted roughly 100 vendors participated and recognized three commission candidates in attendance. Mayor Nunley also announced Pioneer Days at Poe's Tavern on Nov. 5.
During the same discussion Mayor Nunley mentioned a request for a fire hydrant on North Bowman Road. Public Works Director Grant said the area has only one-inch service lines and no water main; City Manager Johnson reported that Hixson Utility is not interested in installing a main. The transcript does not record any immediate action taken on the hydrant request.
