Residents press city on Poe’s Tavern move, drainage; city proceeds with park fencing, holds concession bid
Summary
During public comment, the Soddy-Daisy Montlake Historical Association urged the commission not to move Poe’s Tavern; a resident asked the city to address recurring drainage and flooding. City staff reported a $39,500 fencing bid for North Park courts and the commission approved a $100 employee bonus and surplus of an old copier.

Steve Smith, president of the Soddy-Daisy Montlake Historical Association, told the commission he opposed relocating Poe’s Tavern and some pavilions, saying the cabin was built with city funds, a Lyndhurst Foundation grant and private donations and that moving the chimney and foundation would be difficult. "The cabin could possibly be re-located, but the chimney and foundation would be a different story," Smith said. Commissioner Shipley said donors could be upset if structures are moved and Mayor Everett said plans are in the "infancy stages" with workshops planned to allow public input; "moving the Tavern is not set in stone at this time," Mayor Everett said.
Resident Chris Lawson reported repeated flooding to his property over three years and said he has paid about $2,500 for excavation; he asked the city to clean a ditch and dig out roadside drainage. Commissioner Shipley asked Public Works Director Grant whether he knew the location; Director Grant said the city has done some work in the area and that he would take a look.
City Manager Johnson said the only fencing bid received for the North Park basketball and pickleball courts was $39,500 from Patriot Fence, slightly over budget; he said $12,000 saved from paving and available park-improvement funds could cover the remainder. The commission agreed to hold off on awarding a concession-stand bid to consider in-house construction or donations. The commission also approved surplusing a 2010 Sharp copier and unanimously approved a $100 employee bonus (up from a prior $75). Public Works Director Grant announced a Dayton Pike road closure beginning Dec. 19 for sewer installation, likely lasting one to two weeks; detour signs will be posted.
