Steve Everett elected mayor; Jim Coleman chosen vice-mayor in Soddy-Daisy

At its Dec. 1 meeting, the Soddy-Daisy Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Steve Everett as mayor in a 3–2 roll-call and selected Commissioner Jim Coleman as vice-mayor unanimously; newly elected commissioners Mark Penney and Marcus Keith were sworn in.
Mayor Steve Everett was elected by his fellow commissioners at the Dec. 1 meeting of the Soddy-Daisy Board of Commissioners after City Attorney Elliott opened nominations and conducted a roll-call vote. Commissioner Penney moved to appoint Everett; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Shipley. City Attorney Elliott recorded ayes from Commissioners Shipley, Everett and Penney and nays from Commissioners Keith and Coleman, giving Everett a 3–2 margin.
Judge Clarence Shattuck administered the Oath of Office to newly elected Commissioners Mark Penney and Marcus Keith earlier in the meeting. "It was a pleasure to administer the Oath to Marcus Keith," Judge Shattuck said during the ceremony and received a standing ovation.
After the mayoral vote, Mayor Everett opened nominations for vice-mayor. Commissioner Shipley nominated Jim Coleman, seconded by Commissioner Penney; on a roll-call the ayes were Commissioners Keith, Penney, Shipley, Everett and Coleman, and Coleman was elected vice-mayor.
Mayor Everett thanked the board for their support after the vote. The changes in leadership follow the swearing-in of the newly elected commissioners and take effect immediately as the outgoing mayor and vice-mayor no longer retained authority once successors were sworn in, City Attorney Elliott said.
The commission also approved the minutes of its Nov. 17 meeting at the start of the session. The board adjourned at 7:38 p.m.
