Police Chief Sneed requested approval to purchase license-plate reader (LPR) cameras and told the board a Homeland Security grant has been approved to cover roughly $43,000 of the first year of a five-year contract.
Chief Sneed said the system would include about 16 to 17 quick-deploy cameras and that the grant would cover software purchase and a portion of the initial contract cost. He said the remainder of the contract would be approximately $27,000 per year for the remaining four years; City Manager Johnson said those costs would be paid from the Drug Fund or Capital Outlay if necessary.
Commissioner Penney asked whether the cameras would be used to address speeding; City Manager Johnson said they would be used in school zones for that purpose. Mayor Everett and Commissioner Penney praised the speed-reader sign program and the department's work on traffic safety.
The board approved the request; staff will finalize vendor and funding details and return with any necessary contract paperwork.
