Suffolk Legislature confirms Rudy Sunderman as fire commissioner, approves grants and bonds

The Suffolk County Legislature confirmed Rudolph A. Sunderman as Commissioner of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services during its Oct. 1 general meeting, following a slate of procedural votes approving grant awards and capital projects across the county.

Sunderman’s appointment was moved and seconded during a specially called portion of the meeting and passed unanimously. Legislators praised his decades of experience in volunteer and county fire services and his work with volunteer organizations. Following confirmation, Sunderman thanked the body for the appointment and described the partnerships between fire services and elected officials he says guided his career.

Why it matters: The confirmation places a career fire service leader in charge of Suffolk’s county-level coordination of firefighting, emergency medical services and related preparedness programs. Lawmakers also adopted multiple grant-acceptance resolutions during the meeting, accepting federal and state awards for law-enforcement task forces, public health and traffic safety programs, among others. Separately, the Legislature approved several bond resolutions and appropriations to fund capital projects, including road improvements, sewer planning and park acquisitions.

What legislators said: Several members lauded Sunderman’s local experience and collaborative relationships with fire departments and municipal officials. Legislator Jim Mazzarella told colleagues he had known Sunderman for decades and commended his “organizational skills, caring of fellow human beings and dedication to service.” Legislator Donnelly, who worked alongside Sunderman on pandemic response efforts, urged the Commissioner to take a short break after intense recent work.

Key votes and next steps: The confirmation vote and many of the fiscal measures were adopted on recorded roll calls. Sunderman will begin transitioning into the department leadership role and will be responsible for ongoing coordination of county emergency response, departmental communications and community outreach.

The meeting also advanced planning and funding for multiple capital projects — among them design and planning for sewer and bridge replacements and improvements to county buildings and parks — that will move into procurement and project phases under the county capital program.
