The Commission voted to change the Planning & Zoning Board from seven members to five during its Aug. 5 meeting. Vice-Chairman Timothy Biddle and Commissioner Damon Hoyte registered opposition; Chairman Charles Coffey cast the tie-breaking vote to approve the reduction.
The county attorney noted the long-term approach would be to amend the zoning ordinance, while a short-term fix is to adopt a resolution and reflect the change in the minutes. The motion adopted a phased reduction: as current terms expire or resignations occur the board will be reduced to five members rather than refilling all vacancies.
Audience member Latrese Brown, who attended the meeting and had filed an application to serve on the Planning & Zoning Board, expressed interest in serving and was thanked by the Commission. Commissioners said all applications would be kept on file for future vacancies.
The minutes show the Commission debated governance and term length (four-year terms were noted) and the attorney advised next steps for a permanent ordinance change if the Commission wished to pursue that route.
