Council certifies $23.74 million FY25 categorical allocation to Dorchester County Public Schools

The Dorchester County Council approved the Board of Education (BOE) FY25 categorical budget, certifying the county’s FY25 allocation of $23,740,838 for operating expenses and $0 for capital, at the request of Assistant Comptroller Laurie K. Dale.
During discussion, Councilman Mike Detmer raised concerns about state-mandated Blueprint requirements that could force tax increases or budget shortfalls and noted outstanding facility needs within the school system. Council President George L. Pfeffer, Jr. contextualized county revenues, saying property taxes and income taxes provide about $54 million in revenue, of which $24 million funds the BOE; he highlighted the share of income-tax deductions that support the BOE.
The Council approved the BOE categorical budget and authorized execution of the Annual Budget Certification Statement for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025. Councilmembers expressed appreciation for the BOE staff's diligence in preparing the request and asked that continued attention be paid to facility and student-behavior needs.
The approval was recorded in the minutes; the county will transmit the certification to the school system and maintain documentation of the approved allocation.
