Dorchester County adopts Juneteenth holiday, expands bereavement leave and changes corrections overtime rule

The Dorchester County Council adopted three personnel-policy resolutions during its June 18 meeting, all effective July 1, 2024.
Resolution 664 designates Juneteenth as a county paid holiday and directs the county to update its FY25 holiday schedule. Resolution 665 revises bereavement policy, changing the granted bereavement period to five days (maximum 40 hours) and replacing the term "funeral leave" with "bereavement leave." Resolution 666 amends the personnel rules to remove a special overtime-hours sentence that previously exempted correction personnel from counting hours in excess of 171 in a 28-day work cycle.
Clerk Donna F. Lane stated that no employee comments were received for Resolutions 664 and 665; one employee comment was received and provided to the Council concerning Resolution 666. Roll-call votes for each resolution were recorded as Pfeffer — aye; Detmer — aye; Kramer — aye; Nichols — absent; Travers — aye.
Council members did not amend the resolutions during the meeting. The clerk recorded the votes and the resolutions will be implemented by the County's Human Resources and payroll staff according to their effective dates.
